Twitter reactions: West Indies fightback after Aiden Markaram’s century on Day 1 of Centurion Test

Aiden Markram hits a comeback ton

South African batter Aiden Markram made his comeback in grand style, notching up his sixth century on Day 1 of the first Test against West Indies at SuperSport Park in Centurion. Markram, playing his first Test since August 2022, put on a masterclass smashing 115 from 174 deliveries with the help of 18 boundaries.

The 28-year-old formed crucial partnerships with former skipper Dean Elgar and number three Tony de Zorzi before West Indies fought back and derailed the Proteas’ momentum by picking wickets at regular intervals.

Markram added 141 runs for the opening wicket with Elgar, who scored 71, including 11 boundaries. The right-handed batter then built an 80-run stand with De Zorzi for the first wicket. However, the tourists returned and destroyed the South African batting unit.

West Indies picked up seven wickets for 79 runs in the final session as the hosts finished the opening day at 314/8 in 82 overs. Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph was the chief architect, bagging a three-wicket haul for 60 runs in 16 overs.

‘I thoroughly enjoyed it’: Markram on his brilliant century

It was definitely a special hundred for Markram as he became teary-eyed after reaching the triple-figure mark. The Centurion-born admitted that he had thoughts about whether his Test career had ended.

“You do go through moments where you doubt yourself and wonder if you’ll ever get the opportunity again. I’ve always loved test match cricket and red-ball cricket and was grateful that the coach and the captain backed me and for the day to work out the way it did. I think my biggest emotion was that sense of relief, knowing that you can still compete in this format at this level. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were moments of luck here and there. But just grateful it worked out,” said Markram after the end of the day’s play.

“I suppose it might have helped a bit from a confidence point of view. I think the way the game is going now, you’d rather be positive and not reckless, but you still want to take the game on and express yourself as much as you can. And I think when you get a bit tentative, you can sort of dig an unnecessary hole for yourself,” added Markram.

BAN vs ENG 2023 – WATCH: Mark Wood takes off his jersey during a bizarre catch drill

Mark Wood during a catch drill

The England tour of Bangladesh 2023 is set to begin on Wednesday (March 1). The visitors will be facing hosts in three ODIs and as many T20Is on their tour. Ahead of the opening game, a video of England’s premier fast bowler Mark Wood has gone viral on social media.

Wood last featured in an international match in December 2022 against Pakistan in Karachi. The 33-year-old pacer has been named in the English team’s squad for both ODI and T20I games versus Bangladesh, as the touring party wants to see him gain back momentum ahead of the Ashes series in June.

Wood also seemed to be looking forward to making a comeback in the international arena and was spotted practicing prior to the first ODI against the hosts. The video from the right-arm pacer’s training session left everyone in splits and became a major talking point on social media. In the clip, Wood can be seen participating in the catching drill, but as soon as the ball is hit in the air, he starts removing off his cap, goggles, jersey, and shorts. However, he attempts the catch at last.

Here’s the video:

Fans were amused to see the funny drill of the Durham cricketer and couldn’t control their laughter. Reacting to the video, one of the users wrote, “Bazball is going out of hands,” while another said, “It’s a good training drill to relocate losing and then trying to regain the sight and travel of a ball.”

Notably, Jos Buttler will lead England on their tour, and the three ODIs will take place on March 1, 3, and 6, followed by as many T20Is on March 9,12, and 14. The first match of the series will be held at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.

After the conclusion of the white ball series in Bangladesh, Wood will resume his on-field action in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who bought him for a whopping INR 7.5 crore in the 2022 auction.

Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj reveals how Virat Kohli puzzles bowlers in the nets

Mohammed Siraj on Virat Kohli

Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj has been super impressive in his performances for India. Ever since his debut, Siraj has made his presence felt in both One Day Internationals and Test matches. The pacer is currently part of the Indian setup in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

In the spin-dominated first two Tests, Siraj was only able to take one wicket, which came during the first innings in the opening Test. He is working hard on the nets ahead of the third Test which is set to begin on Wednesday, March 01 at Holkar Stadium in Indore.

Meanwhile, Siraj has shared an interesting story about his different experiences while bowling to Indian batters in the nets. The Hyderabad pacer revealed that bowling to former skipper Virat Kohli is quite challenging as the talismanic batter doesn’t allow much time for the bowlers to settle before facing the next delivery.

“Pujji Bhai (Cheteshwar Pujara), he plays with a deep focus in Test cricket… Virat bhai does not give rest to the fast bowler. He gets ready immediately after hitting the shot, I don’t even get time to settle,” said Siraj on the SG Cricket YouTube channel when quizzed about which batsman he enjoys bowling in the nets.

Siraj revealed the intensity and competitiveness that Kohli brings to the game, even in the nets. The fast bowler said that, unlike other batters, Kohli gets ready immediately after hitting a shot.

“After hitting the shot, the batsman looks here and there, but Virat Bhai… he gets ready immediately. He has this passion… his aggression, which is amazing about a superstar like him,” he added.

Notably, Team India are currently leading the 4-match Border Gavaskar Trophy 2-0 after winning the first two matches in Nagpur and Delhi, respectively. India won the first Test by an innings and 132 runs. Similarly, in the second game, the hosts defeated the tourists by 6 wickets.

IND vs AUS: Sourav Ganguly gives his verdict after KL Rahul stripped of vice-captaincy

Sourav Ganguly on KL Rahul

Team India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing 4-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy after winning the first two matches in Nagpur and Delhi, respectively. Despite the spectacular performance, the major talking point amongst the fans has been the poor form of Indian opener KL Rahul.

Notably, Rahul has barely crossed 17 in his last 10 innings, while his career average has fallen to 35 in 47 matches. In this series, the right-handed batter has scored just 38 runs so far. No wonder Rahul was also stripped of his vice-captaincy post for the last two Tests against Australia owing to his prolonged lean patch.

Amid Rahul’s criticism from all corners, former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has given his blunt verdict. The ex-India skipper reckoned that when an Indian batter fails to score runs at home, it becomes quite difficult to avoid scathing criticism, given the massive expectations of fans.

“When you don’t score runs in India, obviously, you will get flak. KL Rahul hasn’t been the only one. There have been players in the past also,” Ganguly told PTI ahead of Delhi Capitals’ IPL pre-season camp.

Rahul’s last half-century in the longest format came in Johannesburg in January 2022 during the India tour. Interestingly, in the same series, the Karnataka batter also scored his last Test hundred. Ganguly observed that Rahul has all the abilities to make a comeback and will get more opportunities to score runs. Ganguly reckoned that it’s completely up to the captain and coach if they want to continue with a certain player.

“He has performed [over the years], but obviously, you expect a lot more from a top-order batter playing for India because the standards set by others are so high. When you fail for a while, obviously, there will be criticism. I am sure Rahul has the ability, and I am sure as and when he gets more opportunities, he will have to find ways to score. There’s so much focus and attention with a lot of pressure on players. The team management thinks he is an important player for the team. At the end of the day, what coach and captain thinks is important,” added Ganguly.

IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings Suffer A Massive Blow As Ben Stokes On The Verge Of Being Ruled Out Of IPL 2023

Chennai Super Kings could be in massive trouble as one of their marquee players, Ben Stokes could be on his way out of IPL 2023 after walking out limping during the 4th day of New Zealand vs England 2nd Test. English all-rounder and England’s Test Captain, Stokes, was bought for a whopping sum of INR 16.25 Crores in the IPL 2023 Auction by the Chennai Super Kings.

On day 4 of the ongoing second Test match between England and New Zealand, England captain Ben Stokes was seen fumbling with his left knee. While he was spotted walking out after the day’s play, the knee ailment only permitted him to bowl two overs the entire day.

By the end of the day, New Zealand had strengthened their position and were 202-3, trailing by 24 runs when play ended on Sunday. On day four, they pushed their lead beyond 250 and tightened their grip on the Test match.

Kane Williamson’s (132), Devon Conway’s (61), Tom Latham’s (83), and Tom Blundell’s (90) contributions helped the Kiwis bat far better in the second innings than they had in the first.

Ben Stokes’ fitness appears to be a major concern for England, on the other hand. Prior to the first Ashes Test match, which begins in June, he wants to be physically fit. Before that, he will be playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL and will face Ireland in a single Test match starting on June 1.

Chennai Super Kings In Massive Trouble After Ben Stokes’ Serious Injury

With the Test match against Ireland and the Ashes in mind, there are already speculations of Ben Stokes is likely to cut his IPL 2023 tenure with CSK. According to reports, Stokes is determined about taking part in the lone Test against Ireland and may miss the IPL 2023 playoff games for CSK if they qualify. Stokes could end up leading CSK in the future, therefore missing the franchise’s participation in the IPL in 2023 would be a serious setback for his IPL career.

After Sam Curran (18.50 crores) and Cameron Green (16.25 crores), Stokes was the third highest-paid player in the IPL 2023. (17.50 crores).

Mumbai Indians pacer Jasprit Bumrah doubtful for IPL 2023

Jasprit-Bumrah

Mumbai Indians (MI) premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to take part in the forthcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to Cricbuzz, Bumrah’s injury is more serious than it initially appeared. There is also a possibility that he will not be fully fit for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final in June in London, should India qualify for the same.

As per the sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Bumrah has not been feeling comfortable after being out of action for almost five months. There are concerns that he may face a lengthy hiatus from competitive cricket.

The right-arm pacer played his last match for India in September 2022, which was a T20I against Australia.

There are several reports that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) authorities in Bengaluru didn’t deemed Bumrah fit for the upcoming three ODIs against Australia which follows the ongoing four-match Test series. However, the latest information suggests that the NCA is not going to rush the 29-year-old cricketer back onto the field in a hurry.

Meanwhile, former India opener Aakash Chopra feels that MI will have to listen to the BCCI when it comes to monitoring the workload of Bumrah.

“You are an Indian player first, and then comes the franchise. If the pacer feels discomfort, the BCCI will tell Mumbai Indians that Bumrah is unavailable. The world won’t end if he doesn’t play seven games with Jofra Archer,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“If the player is fit, you must monitor his workload. If the BCCI says to rest him for a few games, MI can’t say no. Bumrah is a national treasure, and things aren’t difficult to manage,” he added.

Virat Kohli opens up on his captaincy record in ICC tournaments

Virat Kohli on RCB podcast

During his time as India’s captain from 2014 to 2021, Virat Kohli reflected on his inability to secure any ICC titles. He also acknowledged his good fortune in being a part of the Indian team that emerged victorious in the 2011 World Cup.

Kohli took over as Test captain from MS Dhoni during the 2014-15 tour of Australia, and later led India across formats in 2017. Throughout his tenure, he led the Indian team to the final of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, the 2019 ICC World Cup semifinal, and the 2021 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. Additionally, India remained the top Test team for five consecutive years.

Kohli stepped down as T20I captain before the 2021 T20 World Cup and relinquished the Test captaincy in 2022 after losing a series to South Africa. Despite leading his team to the semifinals and finals of several ICC tournaments, Kohli expressed frustration in being labelled a “failed captain” during his appearance on the RCB podcast season 2.

“Look, you play to win tournaments. I captained in Champions Trophy 2017 (reached the final), 2019 WOrld CUp (reached the semifinal), I captained in World Test Championship (reached the final), and T20 World Cup in 2021 (failed to qualify for the knockouts). After three (four) ICC tournaments, I was considered as a failed captain,” said Kohli.

“I never judged myself from that point of view; what we ended up achieving as a team and as a cultural change that always going to be a matter of pride for me. A tournament happens for a certain period of time but a culture happens over a long period of time and for that you need consistency for that you need more characters than just winning a tournament,” the Delhi lad added.

“I won a World Cup as a player. I won the Champions Trophy as a player. I have been part of the team that has won five Test maces. If you look at that point of view there have been people, who have never won a World Cup,” he added further.

However, Kohli was a member of the Indian team that emerged victorious in the 2011 World Cup held in India, making him a World Cup winner. He attributed his success to good fortune, acknowledging that he was lucky to be a part of the winning squad.

“To be honest, I was lucky enough to be part of that 2011 team. And what led to my selection was also amazing because I had a great run of great scores, and I ended up being with the team. Sachin Tendulkar was playing in his sixth World Cup, and that was the one he won. I was able to be a part of the team for the first time, and I ended up being part of the winning side.

I am looking back at things that I am grateful for not what has gone wrong in my career. I am not mad for my trophy cabinet to be full,” the 34-year-old concluded.

IPL 2023 Auction

The English all-rounder Sam Curran, who is now the most expensive player in Indian Premier League history, cost Punjab Kings a fortune during the IPL 2023 mini-auction.

Curran, whose basic reserve price at the IPL 2023 auction was INR 2 crore, was purchased by the Shikhar Dhawan-led club for INR 18.5 crore at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Kochi.

The previous record was set by the Rajasthan Royals, who offered INR 16.25 crore for Chris Morris, a South African all-rounder, prior to the 2021 season. Curran’s selling price in the IPL 2023 auction exceeded that mark.

Subsequently, when MI agreed to pay the Aussie INR 17.5 crore for the IPL 2023 season, Cameron Green also found success.

Morris was surrounded by CSK as Ben Stokes equaled his score. Stokes would be considered as a potential replacement because MS Dhoni, the team’s captain, would be playing his final season in front of the Chepauk fans in IPL 2023.

West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran, who was sold to LSG for INR 16 crore, eight times his base price, during the IPL 2023 auction, became the most expensive wicketkeeper ever.
