Twitter reactions: Charith Asalanka stars in Sri Lanka’s series-levelling win over Afghanistan
In the third and final ODI between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, the hosts came up on top in a thrilling contest to register a memorable victory and level the series.
Chasing 314, Sri Lanka got off to a good start with openers Pathum Nissanka (35) and Kusal Mendis (67) adding over a hundred runs for the first wicket, but they played slowly. The spin attack of Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan started creating problems, with Rashid, in particular, destroying the middle order. The spin duo reduced Sri Lanka to 164/4 in 30.3 overs.
Then Charith Asalanka and captain Dasun Shanaka calmed things down by adding a crucial partnership of 79 runs for the fifth wicket. However, Rashid again brought back Afghanistan by removing Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga as the Islanders were reeling at 249/6 after 43.1 overs, with Asalanka soldiering on with a cramp.
However, an unlikely hero emerged in the form of youngster Dunith Wellalage, who accelerated the run flow by smashing a few boundaries when Sri Lanka looked out of the chase. Asalanka, on the other hand, continued chipping the runs and took Sri Lanka over the finish line with a winning six over deep mid-wicket, playing a splendid knock of 83 unbeaten off 72 balls.
Earlier, Ibrahim Zadran, who had smashed a tremendous hundred in the series opener, once again shined with the bat and hit another century. The Afghan opener scored 162 off 138 balls, including 15 fours and 4 sixes, as the tourists ended up reaching 313/8 in their allotted 50 overs.
“Really happy with this performance. We were behind this chase, but we came out of it strong. I believe in my captain, he’s a magnificent player, and his 40-odd runs were very helpful. I believed all the way, I know Wella (Wellalage) is a good player. The leg is better now, but at some stages, I thought if I must come out. Glad I fought through it,” said Asalanka after the match.
Here is how Twitter reacted:

Memorable win to square the series 1-1. At the break when the chips were down mostly all the batters stood up when it mattered the most. As a batting group it is a proud day to be part of history created chasing a record score. Good finishing touches Charith & Dunith👍🏽 #slvafg

Fantastic win from SL! What a run-chase. Asalanka finishes with a six. Excellent knock. Ibrahim (162 runs), Najib (77 runs) & Rashid (4/37) were exceptional but their efforts were not good enough to give Afghanistan a series win.

England announce their playing XI for the first Test against Pakistan
England have named their playing XI for the first Test of the three-match series against Pakistan. The opening Test is scheduled to start on Thursday (December 1) in Rawalpindi.
All-rounder Liam Livingstone is all set to make his debut in red-ball cricket, while middle-order batter Ben Duckett has received a long-awaited recall against Pakistan.
Livingstone, who was part of England’s successful T20 World Cup campaign in Australia earlier this month, caught the attention of Test skipper Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum for his eye-catching shots in white-ball cricket.
“It was a pretty simple conversation I had with him (Livingstone), actually before we went out to Australia for the World Cup,” said Stokes in the pre-match presser.
“Obviously, I told him where we stood in terms of him playing some red-ball cricket out in the subcontinent.
“With the skill he has with the ball and the way he plays with the bat is very aligned with how me and Baz want to see the team play. He jumped at the opportunity.
“I don’t necessarily think that not playing a red-ball game is going to be too much of a thing for him.
“He’s a very natural cricketer, he’s going to go out there and really express himself. So, yeah, looking forward to seeing him in the whites.”
When England toured Pakistan for the seven-match T20I series in September-October, Duckett finished as the second-highest run-scorer, and Stokes is now backing him to succeed at the top order in the upcoming Tests.
“Ducky (Duckett) showed out here in the T20s just how good he is against spin bowling,” added Stokes.
“To have someone at the top like him who can mess around with the fields and make it a captain’s nightmare because he sweeps both ways, and we know how much of a part spin plays out in this area.
“(We are) excited to have him at the top.”
England’s playing XI for the Rawalpindi Test:
Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Ben Foakes (wk), Liam Livingstone, Ollie Robinson, Jack Leach, Jimmy Anderson.

“There was a little bit of concern, but…”: England Test skipper Ben Stokes on security fears in Pakistan
The Ben Stokes-led England team have arrived in Islamabad ahead of their first Test series on Pakistan soil in 17 years. They were given a warm welcome by the local authorities ahead of their three-match series against Babar Azam & Co., starting on Thursday, December 1.
Notably, England were due to visit Pakistan last year, but they cancelled their plans after New Zealand abandoned their tour minutes before the first ODI, citing security issues. However, the Three Lions have fulfilled their promise this year by visiting the country, and once they landed in Pakistan, the ECB expressed its delight on Twitter.
“Touchdown in Pakistan for our Men’s Test squad!” England Cricket captioned its post.

A security threat earlier this month had put this tour at risk again after the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan sustained bullet injuries to his leg during the shooting in East Punjab province when he was travelling to Islamabad for a campaign. But, Stokes has quashed all fears following positive advice from their security personnel.
“It’s been a long time since England have played Test cricket in Pakistan,” Stokes said in Abu Dhabi before leaving for Pakistan .
“With what happened with Imran Khan recently, there was a little bit of concern, but we have Reg Dickason, who has been the security man for many years with England, and we left it in his capable hands.”
“In terms of the tour itself, I’m really looking forward to it,” Stokes added.
He signed off by saying: “I’ve never been there, and I’m quite interested to see what the security lark is like. I’ve heard it’s pretty intense.”
England Test squad for Pakistan tour:
Ben Stokes (c), Joe Root, James Anderson, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ben Foakes (wk), Will Jacks, Keaton Jennings, Jack Leach, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood, Rehan Ahmed.

BCB picks 10 Test players in Bangladesh A squad for the first 4-day game against India A
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), on Friday, announced their A squad for the upcoming first 4-day game against India, which will be played from November 29 to December 2 in Cox’s Bazaar, while the second game of the two-match series will be held from December 6-9 in Sylhet.
Unlike their rivals, who only named a handful of Test cricketers in the India A squad, Bangladesh went on to pick as many as 10 Test players in their A squad for the opening 4-day fixture. Mohammad Mithun will captain the side that features the likes of former Test skipper Mominul Haque and other Test cricketers such as Shadman Islam, Mahmudul Hasan, Nazmul Hossain, Mossadek Hossain, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam and Khaled Ahmed.
Minhajul Abedin, the BCB chief selector, explained the move by saying the involvement of Test players in this game would help prepare the team for the upcoming two-match Test series against the mighty India.
“We have picked many Test cricketers in our ‘A’ squad as we want to prepare for the upcoming two-match Test series against India through these four-day games,” said Abedin, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
“We have not played a longer version of cricket for a while apart from our domestic competition, and that is the reason we have decided to include so many Test probables, considering the fact when you play against such tough opposition, it will help you to prepare better,” he added.
Bangladesh A squad for 1st four-day game:
Shadman Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mominul Haque, Mohammad Mithun(C), Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tawhid Hridoy, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, Zakir Ali Anik, Nayeem Hassan, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Rejaur Rahman Raja, Syed Khaled Ahmed and Sumon Khan.
India A squad for 1st four-day game:
Abhimanyu Easwaran (C), Rohan Kunnummal, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Yash Dhull, Sarfaraz Khan, Tilak Varma, Upendra Yadav (wk), Saurabh Kumar, Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini, Atit Sheth.

Left-handed batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa has opted out from the Afghanistan ODIs, requesting for a break after Sri Lanka Cricket (SL) announced a 16-player squad on Thursday. According to reports, SLC have accepted his request.

BCB announces Bangladesh squad for India ODIs; Shakib Al Hasan returns
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced their 16-man squad for the upcoming ODI series against India, which saw the return of veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.
Shakib opted out of Bangladesh’s last white-ball tour of Zimbabwe in July-August, and the tourists lost the ODI leg 2-1 in their former skipper’s absence. Now with a full-strength Team India, led by Rohit Sharma, visiting the country for the first time since 2015, Shakib is all set to play under the captaincy of Tamim Iqbal.
While left-arm spinner Taijul Islam makes way for Shakib, middle-order batter Yasir Ali has been included in the side as a like-for-like replacement for Mosaddek Hossain. In the fast-bowling department, Shoriful Islam has been left out, with Ebadot Hossain – who replaced Shoriful and made his debut in the third ODI against Zimbabwe – preferred in his place.
India unveiled their ODI squad for the Bangladesh tour last month and recently made changes to it after star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and young pacer Yash Dayal were ruled out due to injuries.
Bangladesh squad: Tamim Iqbal (c), Litton Das, Anamul Haque Bijoy, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain, Yasir Ali Chowdhury, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury, Nasum Ahmed, Mahmud Ullah, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Nurul Hasan.
The first two ODI matches between Bangladesh and India will take place on December 4 and 7 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Dhaka. The third ODI, which was previously scheduled to be held on December 10 in Dhaka, has now been moved to the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) in Chattogram on the same date.

BCCI names India A squad for Bangladesh tour; Rohan Kunnummal gets maiden call-up
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squad for India A’s two four-day matches against Bangladesh A, which will take place ahead of the two-match Test series between the sides.
Senior cricketers Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav are part of the squad, which will be captained by the Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran. The opening four-day match will be played from November 29 to December 2 in Cox’s Bazaar, while the second match shall take place from December 6-9 in Sylhet.
After the two four-day fixtures, both sides will meet in a two-match Test series, which is part of the World Test Championship (WTC), and will be held from December 14-18 and December 22-26 in Chattogram and Dhaka, respectively.
There is a maiden India A call-up for Kerala’s Rohan Kunnummal, who has impressed one and all with his form in first-class cricket. The 24-year-old has hit four centuries this year in nine first-class innings. Apart from Kunnummal, the young batting pair of Yash Dhull and Yashasvi Jaiswal have also made the cut alongside Baroda’s seam-bowling allrounder Atit Sheth.
Dhull, who led India’s Under-19 team to World Cup victory in 2022, has already hit hundreds on debut in the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy. Similarly, Jaiswal has been showing supreme consistency in the domestic circuit. He recently became the joint-fastest Indian to 1000 first-class runs, equalling Amol Muzumdar and Rusi Modi. Jaiswal has five centuries and a fifty to his credit in seven first-class games at a remarkable average of 84.58.

Jadeja – who is yet to recover from his knee injury – will remain under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team, while Dayal has a lower back issue and, therefore, both will miss the upcoming matches.

Former Australia coach Justin Langer hits out at players for complaining behind his back
Just a week ahead of the start of Australia’s Test summer, former head coach Justin Langer has dropped some bombshells regarding the turn of events that led to his resignation from the post.
Notably, Langer took charge of the team in a challenging time when Darren Lehmann had stepped down following the Sandpapergate in South Africa. Langer helped the Aussies regain their pride as, under his leadership, Australia won the Ashes 4-0 and clinched their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021.
However, Langer was still not offered a long-term contract extension from Cricket Australia (CA), and therefore, instead of accepting a short-term offer, the 52-year-old decided to step down from the role. Langer said he didn’t like the fact that some members of the team behind his back went to complain about his intense coaching techniques. Langer claimed those who propagandized against him were cowards and reckoned the majority of players supported him.
“Everyone was being nice to my face, but I was reading about this stuff and half of it, I swear to God, and on my kids’ lives, I could not believe that is what was making the papers. A lot of journalists use the word ‘source’. I would say change that word to ‘coward’. They’ve either got an axe to grind with someone, and they won’t come and say it to your face, or they’re just leaking stuff for their agenda,” said Langer while speaking to the Back Chat podcast.
Langer said he always wanted to hear honest feedback, but Pat Cummins and then white-ball skipper Aaron Finch made it too late to let him know about the happenings as the whisper campaigns were already running against him.
“I spoke to Pat Cummins. He said to me about five times, ‘This might be brutally honest’. I said, ‘Pat, there is nothing brutal about your feedback. People say I’m very intense, but they’re mistaking intensity with honesty,” added Langer.

"Not Carrying Any Baggage": Suryakumar Yadav After Starring For India Against New Zealand

Martin Guptill released from New Zealand’s central contract
New Zealand veteran Martin Guptill has been released from his central contract, the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed on Wednesday (November 23).
Guptill seems to have lost his place in both white-ball teams as New Zealand have started giving preference to their young opener Finn Allen. Notably, Guptill was part of the Black Caps squad in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia but wasn’t given a single game. Similarly, in the recently-concluded T20I series against India, the senior opener was left out of the squad.
Guptill has not retired from international cricket and has even expressed his desire to continue playing. But the 36-year-old also admitted that he understands what the team needs and with this he will get a chance to explore other opportunities.
“Playing for my country has been a massive honour, and I’m grateful to everyone within the Blackcaps and NZC for their support. But, equally, I’m realistic enough to understand the need to consider my options in the current circumstances. With this release, I’m still available for New Zealand, I have the chance to explore other opportunities, and I also get to spend more time with my family – which is important,” said Guptill, as quoted by Stuff.
NZC chief executive David White termed Guptill a legendary cricketer and stated that the Auckland-born had earned the right to play out his career on his own terms.
“We understand Martin’s position. He’s been a fantastic batsman for us for a long period of time, and we certainly don’t wish to stand in his way as he explores other opportunities. Martin’s been a giant of the white ball game, a committed and well-respected member of the Blackcaps, and has earned the right to play out his career on his own terms. He leaves his contract with our best wishes,” said White.
If, by any means, Guptill doesn’t get to play again, he will finish his career with staggering numbers. He has scored 7346 runs in 198 ODIs, which places him third on New Zealand’s all-time list, with 18 hundreds and 39 half-centuries [including a double ton (237)] in the 50-overs format. In 122 T20Is, Guptill amassed 3531 runs – most by any New Zealander – and has two centuries and 20 fifties to his name.

Here’s why Shaheen Afridi has not been named in Pakistan’s squad for England Tests
Pakistan’s left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi will miss the three-match Test series against England in December. He has not been named in Pakistan’s 18-man squad for the home series, which includes uncapped leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed and fast bowler Mohammad Ali.
England will play a Test match in Pakistan after 17-long-years. They last toured the country in 2005. Pakistan has twice hosted England during this period in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). England toured Pakistan before the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia for a seven-match T20I leg and went onto beat Babar Azam & Co. in the T20 WC final on November 13.
Pakistan’s first Test against England will start on December 1 in Rawalpindi, before further matches in Multan from December 9 and then Karachi from December 17.
Shaheen undergoes appendicitis surgery
The 22-year-old Afridi tweaked his right knee taking a catch during the five-wicket defeat to England in the T20 WC final at the MCG earlier this month, while he underwent an appendicitis surgery on last Sunday.
According to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Afridi will require three to four weeks’ rest following surgery after which he will resume his two-week rehabilitation.
Pakistan squad for England Tests:
Babar Azam (captain), Mohammad Rizwan, Abdullah Shafique, Abrar Ahmed, Azhar Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Haris Rauf, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Nauman Ali, Salman Ali Agha, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Saud Shakeel, Shan Masood and Zahid Mehmood.

‘I want them to chip in with the ball’: Hardik Pandya weighs on expanding batters’ role in Team India
It’s a known fact that whenever India have tasted success in the ICC events, it has been because of the multi-dimensional players, who can chip in with either bat or ball when required. Recently, after India’s embarrassing 10-wicket defeat against England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final, former coach Anil Kumble also highlighted the same area where the current team is lacking.
Hardik Pandya, who is leading Team India in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, also seems to be interested in expanding the batters’ role. This was evident in the second T20I against the Black Caps that saw part-timer Deepak Hooda bowling 2.5 overs. The move clearly worked for the Men in Blue as Hooda went on to take four wickets for just 10 runs.
After India’s win in the second T20I by 65 runs, Hardik mentioned that he wants more batters to roll their arm over when needed while admitted that not every time this move is going to work.
“Can’t get any better than this. Everyone chipped in, but it was surely a special innings by Surya. We would have taken a score of 170-175. Bowlers did well, and it was about being aggressive in the mindset. It doesn’t mean taking a wicket every ball, but being aggressive with the ball is important. The conditions were very wet, so credit to the bowlers. I have bowled a lot and going forward, I want to see more bowling options. Not always that this will work, but I want more batters to chip in with the ball,” Hardik said after the match.
“I expect them to be professional, which they are. Give them the opportunity to enjoy themselves. It’s about creating an environment where they are all in a happy space. I see many times in this team that all the players are happy for each other’s success. And that’s important,” he added.

NZ vs IND: Captain Kane Williamson to miss 3rd T20I; replacement announced
New Zealand have suffered a big blow ahead of their third and final T20I against India as captain Kane Williamson will not be available for the contest in Napier because of a pre-arranged medical appointment. Williamson is expected to rejoin the unit before of the three-match ODI series, scheduled to begin on Friday.
Head coach Gary Stead informed that in the absence of Williamson, veteran pacer Tim Southee would lead Black Caps in the decider.
“Kane’s been trying to get this booked in for a while now, but unfortunately, it hasn’t been able to fit into our schedule. The health and well-being of our players and staff is paramount, and we look forward to seeing him in Auckland,” said Stead while also confirming that the medical appointment has nothing to do with Williamson’s elbow, which has troubled him in the past.
Stead also announced that Mark Chapman has been added as the replacement for Williamson. Chapman recently featured in the T20 World Cup 2022 and the tri-series before the multi-team event.
“He’s a quality player who offers good versatility in the order,” said Stead regarding Champman.
Notably, Williamson’s form in the shortest format has raised many eyebrows in recent times. The Black Caps did make it to the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-finals, but Williamson scored only 178 runs in the tournament at a strike rate of 116.33.
Last week, he was also released by his IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad as he made only 216 runs at a strike rate of 93.51 in the 2022 season of the cash-rich league. Then in the previous T20I against the Men in Blue, Williamson top-scored for New Zealand in the chase with 61 off 52 balls, but it wasn’t enough to challenge the outcome of the match. Overall in T20Is, Williamson has scored 2464 runs in 87 games at an average of 33.29 and a strike rate of 123.01 with the help of 17 half-centuries.

Doors opened for David Warner to apply against lifetime leadership ban
Cricket Australia (CA) has announced changes to its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, opening the doors for David Warner to have his lifetime leadership ban overturned.
Warner was banned from all captaincy positions after the sandpaper scandal in South Africa in 2018.
Following the Cape Town Test, Warner was suspended for 12 months and a life-time ban was imposed on him for holding any leadership position. The then skipper Steve Smith was also outed for 12 months, with an additional 12 month leadership ban, while Cameron Bancroft was suspended for nine months.
Jacqui Partridge, CA’s head of integrity, conducted the review after a request from the board.
“Under the changes, players and support staff can now apply to have long-term sanctions modified,” CA said in a statement.
“Any applications will be considered by a three-person review panel, comprising independent Code of Conduct commissioners, which must be satisfied that exceptional circumstances exist to justify modifying a sanction.”
According to CA, a number of factors will be taken into consideration if Warner applies for lifting his ban.
“These circumstances and considerations will include whether the subject of the sanction has demonstrated genuine remorse; the subject’s conduct and behaviour since the imposition of the sanction; whether rehabilitation programs have been undertaken (if applicable) and the length of time that has passed since the sanction was imposed and whether sufficient time has passed to allow for reform or rehabilitation,” it said.
The 35-year-old Warner has admitted he wants to have his leadership ban overturned and will be happy to have a chat with the board members.
“There is talk that I might be able to have a chat to the integrity unit. If that’s possible I’m happy to sit down with them and chew the fat a little bit and see where we’re at,” said the opening batter.
“If it does get overturned then we have to go from there. For me I’m a leader in this team no matter what. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a ‘c’ or a ‘vc’ next to your name. You’ve got to put your best foot forward and lead by example,” he added.

Shubman Gill reminisces MS Dhoni’s golden words after a disappointing debut
Team India’s young batting sensation Shubman Gill has revealed an interesting anecdote regarding former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. While recalling his international debut for the Men in Blue, Gill stated how Dhoni motivated him and boosted his morale after the Punjab cricketer couldn’t do much with the bat in his maiden game in January 2019 against New Zealand.
Gill mentioned that he was having some insecurities about his future after getting out for a mere 9 run off 21 balls against the Black Caps in Hamilton, which India eventually lost by eight wickets.
Gill reminisced that Dhoni came up and reminded him how his debut was, in fact, better as the Ranchi-born superstar was run out for a golden duck on his first game in international cricket against Bangladesh in December 2004. The 23-year-old said Dhoni calmed him down by sharing some jokes, and Gill was touched by the veteran stumper’s behaviour.
“The day I made my debut, I was dismissed when India were around 15. I was sitting outside and was sad, having scored just 9 runs in my debut. So Mahi bhai came and saw that I was very sad. I was then around 18-19 years old. He told me at least your debut was better than mine,” said Gill while speaking to actress Sonam Bajwa on her chat show ‘Dil Diyan Gallan’.
“I realised he was dismissed for a golden duck in his debut. He did not face a single ball and was run out. Then he started laughing and joking, and I was touched by that gesture,” he added.
Gill has so far played 11 Tests and 12 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in which he has scored 579 runs. The right-handed batter has smashed four half-centuries in the longest format, while in the ODIs, he has three fifties and a hundred to his credit. Gill is currently part of India’s squad for the white-ball tour of New Zealand.

New Zealand Star Finn Allen Speaks About Challenge Of Facing India
Ahead of the second T20I against India, New Zealand opening batter Finn Allen spoke about the challenge of facing such a quality opposition.
“The things that he does I wouldn’t even dream of doing”: Glenn Phillips in awe of Suryakumar Yadav’s audacious strokeplay
The first T20I of the three-match series between New Zealand and India got abandoned due to rain, and the second game will be played at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday, November 20.
Ahead of the contest, New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips has expressed his admiration towards India’s Suryakumar Yadav and also added that he cannot dream of doing things that the Mumbaikar has been doing on the field.
Suryakumar Yadav, the number 1 ranked T20I batter, has scored 1040 runs in 29 matches with one century and nine fifties at an average of 43.33 and strike rate of 185.71 this year. He also had an amazing T20 World Cup 2022, amassing 239 runs in 6 matches with three half-centuries at a stunning strike rate of 189.69.
Phillips, who himself made 201 runs with one ton and one fifty in the recently-concluded tournament, is in awe of Suryakumar’s audacious strokeplay.
“He (Surya) is absolutely incredible. The things that he does I wouldn’t even dream of doing. I would love to try but we have very different games. The wrist strength that he’s got to be able to hit balls for six in extremely awkward areas is a talent you rarely see,” Phillips was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz.
Phillips also predicted that on good batting tracks like Bay Oval (Mt Maunganui) and McLean Park (Napier), Suryakumar’s strike rate would be even higher than it was on Australian pitches.
“I could easily see (Yadav’s) strike rate being even higher here than it was in Aussie, with the slightly smaller grounds and the pitches very similar, potentially a bit bouncier with a bit more grass on them. It’s going to be very interesting what sort of strike rates we see here,” the Blackcaps superstar added.
He also mentioned that the “high risk-high reward game” that is played by him and Surya keeps the opposition in the game as they have the danger of getting out if some of their adventurous shots aren’t executed properly.
“I have got my strengths and he has got his, and we go about our jobs in different ways. And the way we both play presents opportunities for the opposition to get us out as well. It’s part of the risk and reward of middle-order cricket in T20,” concluded Phillips.

New Zealand vs India 2022, 2nd T20I: Predicted XI, Pitch and Weather report
New Zealand and India are all set to face each other in the second T20 International (T20I) of the ongoing three-match series at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday.
The opening game was abandoned without a ball bowled (no toss) because of persistent rain. Both sides will be looking for a win to set up the decider in Napier.
Pitch and Weather report:
Spinners have done relatively well at this venue as compared to pacers. The average first-innings total in seven completed T20Is at the Bay Oval is 199, and all games have been won by the team batting first. Thunderstorms are forecasted on the match day, so there could be a rain-curtailed game.
Probable XIs:
New Zealand: Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson (c), Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Adam Milne, Lockie Ferguson
India: Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer/Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik
Recent form:
New Zealand: LWLWW (last five completed T20Is, most recent first)
India: LWWLW
What they said:
“We’ve had a whole heap of T20 cricket in the past. We’re quite excited to play India, irrespective, though. The likes of Adam Milne were in the T20 World Cup squad but didn’t get an opportunity, so this is a good time to get them some game time,” New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson had said after the 1st T20I was washed out.
“I know the other boys will follow exactly what the management and captain would say, they are all professionals. These guys are young by age but not by experience. They have played plenty of IPL and got a good amount of Internationals as well,” said Indian captain Hardik Pandya.

Jofra Archer likely to make a comeback ahead of IPL 2023
The players’ retention/release list ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 was submitted by all 10 franchises earlier this week. While the teams retained some obvious picks, there were a few surprising names too in the release list that featured 85 players in total.
One of the interesting names in the retained group was England pacer Jofra Archer, who has been out of action since July 2021. The right-arm pacer didn’t play a single game in the last season of the cash-rich league, but Mumbai Indians (MI), who took a flyer on Archer by picking him in the last auction, retained the Barbados cricketer with the hope that he would be ready for the next IPL season.
The gamble of Mumbai could well be paying off as, according to a report, Archer has already started bowling and would be fully ready by March, when the lucrative league is scheduled to begin.
“He is currently in the UAE with the England Lions team and is continuing his rehab. He is making excellent progress, and the view is that he will be looking to play competitively again during the early part of 2023,” a spokesman for the England Wales Cricket Board (ECB) informed Cricbuzz.
Notably, Archer was originally out of action due to an elbow injury which had been troubling him for a long time, but a stress fracture ruled him out of playing any sort of competitive cricket for the entire 2022.
Despite knowing Archer’s unavailability, the Mumbai-based franchise took a chance on him and invested INR 8 crore in the last auction, hoping that the speedster would form a deadly combination with frontline pacer Jasprit Bumrah but sadly for MI fans, that didn’t happen. Currently, both Bumrah and Archer are out of action, but fans would expect them to be ready and play together in the forthcoming season for the five-time champions.

Dinesh Karthik Explains Why Rishabh Pant Should Open In T20Is
Left-handed batter Rishabh Pant has not had a good outing in the shortest format of the game off late and one can put down his poor performances to lack of clarity in terms of his role
Dinesh Karthik reveals why India didn’t play Yuzvendra Chahal or Harshal Patel even once at T20 World Cup 2022
Team India’s hopes of lifting the T20 World Cup title after 15 years were shattered after losing to England in a one-sided semi-final at the Adelaide Oval on November 10.
Since that day, the Men in Blue have been subjected to severe criticism from the fans and the cricket experts for the decisions made by the team management and captain Rohit Sharma. India’s second-leading wicket-taker in T20Is, Yuzvendra Chahal and death over specialist Harshal Patel were not given a single game over the course of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.
After more than a week, wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has cleared the air on why Chahal and Harshal were not selected in India’s playing XI for any game.
During his conversation with Cricbuzz, Karthik revealed that both Chahal and Harshal were told at the start of the tournament that they would make it into the XI only if conditions favoured their presence or else they might have to sit out for the entire competition.
“They didn’t sulk or get upset once because they were very sure. At the start of the tournament, they were told that under these conditions, we would be playing you; otherwise, it might be difficult. So, they were very aware and were preparing in such a way that when they get an opportunity, they would try and do their best, but there might be a chance that they ended up not playing.
“So, when that clarity is there from the coach and captain, it makes the job easier for the player because you just start looking inward and thinking, okay what do I do to start preparing better. That is what they were doing, and had they been given a chance, they would have given their best. This is a very high-intensity tournament.
“As mentioned, he [Chahal] played a lot of matches for India and he knows the feeling of being dropped,” Karthik added.
Chahal and Harshal are currently part of the six limited-overs games against New Zealand. The first T20I got abandoned due to rain in Wellington on Friday (November 18). India are slated to play two more T20Is, followed by three ODIs on their tour of New Zealand.

Shahid Afridi explains why Babar Azam should give up Pakistan’s T20I captaincy
Pakistan had a memorable campaign in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. The Men in Green lost two of their initial games in the Super 12 stage and were on the verge of getting knocked out of the tournament.
However, things turned dramatically as South Africa lost their game against Netherlands, which allowed Pakistan to make it to the semis if they defeated Bangladesh, which they did and booked a match against New Zealand. Pakistan then knocked out New Zealand and secured a birth in the final. But their luck didn’t favour this time as England defeated them in the summit clash to clinch the title.
Following the loss in the final, former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has urged Babar Azam to give up captaincy in the shortest format and focus on leading the side in the ODIs and Tests. Afridi said he doesn’t want Babar to carry the extra burden of captaincy across all three formats.
“Babar was not happy with the management at Karachi Kings as it is. I feel he should take a tough call and quit captaincy in T20 cricket. He should focus on his batting and lead the team in Tests and one-dayers,” said Afridi while speaking on Sama TV.
Notably, the Pakistan skipper has been one of the leading run-getters in world cricket. He is the only player to be rated in the top 3 across all formats, but his poor form in the T20 World Cup 2022 raised concerns. Babar only managed 124 runs in 7 matches at a strike rate of just 93. Afridi said he respects Babar and suggested the Pakistan squad has the likes of Shadab Khan or Mohammad Rizwan, who could take up captaincy in T20I cricket.
“I respect Babar a lot, and that’s why I don’t want him to take the pressure of captaincy in T20 cricket. I want him to focus on his captaincy in longer formats. You do have players like Shadab, Rizwan and even Shan Masood who can lead the team in the T20 format,” Afridi added.

David Warner’s wife Candice reveals why the star cricketer receives weekly pocket money
Australia opening batter David Warner may be a multi-millionaire, but he lives on modest weekly pocket money set by his wife Candice.
David and Candice, who tied the knot in 2015 and are blessed with three daughters, recently moved into a new mansion in Sydney’s Maroubra. It is estimated that the celebrity couple spent about ASD 4 million in renovating the four-bedroom and two-bathroom property.
It all happened after David hinted about his retirement from Test cricket after the Ashes next year, with the southpaw confirming he will leave the Red Ball format first.
“Test cricket will probably be the first one to fall off,” David had said on Triple M’s Deadset Legends show last week.
“Because that’s how it will pan out. The T20 World Cup is in 2024, (one-day) World Cup next year. Potentially it could be my last 12 months in test cricket. But I love the white-ball game; it’s amazing.”
Australia will play Test series against England and India, both away, before returning to India for the ODI World Cup.
His pocket money is healthy: Candice
While speaking to Gus, Jude & Wendell on Triple M Rush Hour, Candice opened up about the couple’s financial arrangement.
The former Ironwoman explained that she limits David’s spending because he sometimes overdoes gambling and impulse buying.
“His pocket money is healthy. I’m the sensible spender while David is quite unpredictable and loves having a punt,” she said.
“David loves randomly buying a horse or betting on the golf course, so he needs an allowance to keep our family alive [and] Make sure the mortgage is paid.
“But the pocket money increases around my birthday and anniversaries!” Mrs Warner concluded.

England opener Alex Hales reprimanded over ‘blackface’ social media post
England’s T20 World Cup winner Alex Hales has been upbraided for an old social media post in which he appeared in blackface. Hales, who recently shined in England’s T20 World Cup triumph, was pictured in a 2009 Facebook post dressed as American rapper Tupac Shakur at a fancy dress party.
"The theme was musicians and Tupac is, was and always will be my favourite musician, so I went as him." – Alex Hales pic.twitter.com/cX74QDII3R
— The Upshot (@UpshotTowers) November 19, 2021
The Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) reprimanded Hales for his “blackface” photo after it was published in a national newspaper last year. Hales, who had earlier issued a public apology, questioned the need for “repeated publication of these old matters” during the CDC’s investigation.
However, Chris Tickle, the adjudicator, reckoned that “the interests of transparency should prevail”. Notably, the CDC is constituted by the ECB as the body that hears disciplinary cases in the professional domestic game in England and Wales.
Hales was charged in August with a breach of ECB directive 3.3, which states: “No such person may conduct himself in a manner or do any act or omission which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the game of cricket into disrepute.”
Further, an additional charge regarding the governing body’s anti-discrimination code was dropped by the ECB, and Tickle decided that Hales’s previous apologies counted in his favour. Tickle imposed no fine, costs or invited any further expressions of remorse.
“His appreciation of rap music and Tupac was widely known. He was one of Mr Hales’ favourite musicians. No offence was taken by anyone at the time or subsequently. Mr Hales did not believe his actions were racist or offensive at the time, though he has acknowledged that he would not dress in that manner now. He is older and more mature. Given that context, I find that there was no racist or discriminatory intent in dressing as he did and in posing for the photo,” wrote Tickle in his judgement as quoted by DailyMail.

It all happened in the fifth over of England’s innings when Starc bowled on a good length, and Roy wasn’t sure whether to go forward or stay back. The white leather came back in sharply, ripping through and shattering the stumps.

After 22 overs, England have managed to post 111/4 on the board. The three lions were in deep trouble at one stage, having lost four wickets for 66, but experienced campaigners Dawid Malan (40*) and Jos Buttler (25*) steadied the ship for England.
Earlier, Australia left out Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh in the playing XI and picked up Ashton Agar along with Cameron Green. The approach of picking spinners somehow shows Australia’s plans for the forthcoming ODI World Cup in India.
“Looks like a really good wicket that will stay the same throughout, so we’ll try and chase something down tonight. We’re really excited. We’ve had a good freshen-up the last week. [Team News] Carey at 5, Stoinis at 6, Green at 7, two spinners, Agar and Zampa, Starc and myself,” Cummins said at the toss.
