ENG v IND: Heather Knight refutes Deepti Sharma’s warning claim regarding Charlie Dean’s run-out

Heather Knight accuses Deepti Sharma of lying on Charlie Dean's run-out incident

The controversy regarding Deepti Sharma’s run-out of Charlie Dean has gone further, with England Women skipper Heather Knight accusing the all-rounder of ‘lying’ over her claims that Dean was warned before her dismissal on Saturday.

Notably, in a crunch situation when the English team needed 17 runs to win with their last-wicket pair of Dean and Freya Davies in the middle, Deepti, after noticing that Dean was outside her crease at the non-striker’s end, stopped in her bowling stride and whipped the bails off.

The incident stirred up the spirit-of-cricket debates, with the experts having mixed opinions. While many England cricketers expressed their displeasure, the Indian fraternity came out in support of Deepti. Upon reaching India, Deepti revealed that she ran Dean out only after issuing several warnings to the opposition and also getting the on-field umpire familiar with the whole situation.

“That was our plan because she was repeatedly doing it, and we had warned them too. We had also informed the umpires. But still, she was right there, so there wasn’t much we could do. We did everything according to the rules and guidelines,” Deepti told the reporters.

However, Knight, who is currently out with a hip-joint injury, took to Twitter to refute the claims of Deepti. Though Knight admitted what India did was well within the rules but also accused Deepti of lying.

“The game is over, Charlie was dismissed legitimately. India were deserved winners of the match and the series. But no warnings were given. They don’t need to be given, so it hasn’t made the dismissal any less legitimate. But if they’re comfortable with the decision to affect the run-out, India shouldn’t feel the need to justify it by lying about warnings,” said Knight in a series of tweets.

India beat Australia in the second T20I

In the rain-affected second T20 International on Friday, Team India defeated Australia at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur to level the three-match series.

The match began two-and-a-half hours after its designated time due to a wet outfield and was reduced to an eight-over-a-side contest. Captain Rohit Sharma sizzled with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 46 from 20 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries, including four sixes.

Eventually, the contest went down to the wire with nine needed off the final over. That’s when Dinesh Karthik stepped up and justified his ‘finisher’ tag by smashing a six and a four off the first two deliveries to take India home.

Earlier, wicketkeeper Matthew Wade smashed an unbeaten 43 to power Australia to a challenging 90/5 in their allotted eight overs. The tourists lost wickets in quick succession but continued to score at a good rate after being asked to bat.

Apart from Wade, skipper Aaron Finch chipped in with a valuable 15-ball 31 at the top. For the hosts, Axar Patel (2/13) bowled a fiery spell, picking up a couple of wickets for just 13 runs in his quota of 2 overs.

Australia beat India in the first T20I

Australia defeated India in the opening T20I of the ongoing three-match series at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Tuesday. Chasing the massive target of 209, the contest went down to the wire, where the visitors managed to register a memorable victory with 4 wickets in hand and four balls to spare.

Cameron Green came to open the innings and completely demolished the Indian bowling attack. The right-handed batter smashed 61 from just 30 balls, with the help of 12 boundaries, including four sixes.

After the dismissal of Green, India did come back with three more wickets in quick successions, but it wasn’t enough as Matthew Wade smashed an unbeaten 45 from 21 deliveries, including 6 fours and a couple of sixes, to get Australia home with four balls to spare.

Earlier, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul smashed scintillating half-centuries to help India post 208/6 on the board in their allotted 20 overs.

After being asked to bat first, the hosts lost skipper Rohit Sharma (11) and star batter Virat Kohli (2) in the powerplay. Before the tourists could add more pressure, Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the innings.
The duo formed a crucial partnership of 68 runs for the third wicket. Rahul scored 55 from 35 deliveries, hitting four fours and three sixes before he was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood. Soon, Green got rid of Suryakumar, who hit four sixes in his 25-ball 46.

India were four down at 126 after Surya’s wicket in the 14th over when Pandya came in the middle and absolute destroyed the Aussies. The star all-rounder played out just 30 balls and went on to smash unbeaten 71 runs with the help of seven fours and five sixes.

“I was so proud of how the team came together to win the Vitality IT20 series. Sometimes when you’re missing big name players, other players step up and take their chance, and I felt we really did that. It’s a young group, but they worked tremendously hard and showed their skill and resilience to get over the line,” said head coach Lisa Keightley as quoted by SkySports.

“Amy did a great job as captain, and she was ably supported by Sophie [Ecclestone], so we want them to carry on what they’ve been doing. It’s another big series, especially with points counting towards ICC Women’s World Cup qualification, and with the summer ending at Lord’s, there’s a lot to be excited about,” she added.

England Women Squad for ODIs against India:

Amy Jones, Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Freya Davies, Alice Davidson-Richards, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Freya Kemp, Issy Wong, Danni Wyatt.

Five-time World Cup winner Rachael Haynes calls time on international career

Rachael Haynes retires from international cricket

Rachael Haynes, the Australian women’s cricket team vice-captain, has retired from international and state cricket with immediate effect. She confirmed on Thursday that the recent Commonwealth Games gold medal triumph over India in Birmingham was her last appearance for Aussies.

Since her international debut in 2009, Haynes went on to play 6 Tests, 77 ODIs and 84 T20Is for Australia. She served as Meg Lanning‘s deputy since 2018 – a four-year period in which the Aussies won two T20 world cups, one 50-over world cup and the CWG gold medal.

Notably, Haynes will continue to play for Sydney Thunder in the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) but will not be part of the New South Wales team that stars its domestic one-day campaign in a week.

“Playing at this level isn’t possible without the support of many people. From clubs, states, coaches, family and friends, I’m so grateful to those who helped me along the way. In particular, I want to thank my parents, Ian and Jenni, and partner Leah for their unwavering support. To all the teammates across my career, you are the reason I’ve played as long as I have. You’ve inspired me to be better every day. I’ve learnt something from all of you, on and off the field. You’ve challenged me as a player, helped me grow as a person and most importantly, made cricket fun,” said Haynes in a statement as quoted by Cricket.com.au.

“One of the great things about having a long career is watching those around you develop. I’m extremely proud of the way this team has brought players in and nurtured their development. The ability to help players transition smoothly has been instrumental to our team’s success. To be a leader within this environment has been the greatest privilege of my career,” Haynes added.

Robin Uthappa announces retirement from all forms of Indian cricket

Robin Uthappa retires from all forms of Indian cricket

Robin Uthappa, the former Karnataka cricketer, has announced his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket. The explosive right-handed batter, who last represented India in 2015, made the announcement on his official Twitter handle.

Uthappa has obtained a no-objection Certificate (NOC) from Kerala, the last state he played for in the domestic circuit and will be free to take up assignments in overseas T20 tournaments.

“It has been my greatest honour to represent my country and my state, Karnataka. However, all good things must come to an end, and with a grateful heart, I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket,” Uthappa captioned his post on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old stylish batter played 46 ODIs and 13 T20Is for Team India and was part of the side that lifted the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Interestingly, Uthappa has played all 15 seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL), representing as many as six teams: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Mumbai Indians (MI), Pune Warriors India, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Overall, the Coorg-born cricketer accumulated 4952 runs in 205 IPL games, at a strike rate of 130.35 and an average of 27.51.

While announcing the retirement, Uthappa shared a lengthy statement in which he thanked BCCI, Karnataka Cricket Association, other state cricket bodies, his family, friends, IPL franchises, teammates and fans.

“It’s been 20 years since I started playing professional cricket, and it has been the greatest honour to represent my country and state, Karnataka – a wonderful journey full of ups and downs; one that has been fulfilling, rewarding, enjoyable, and has allowed me to grow as a human being. However, all good things must come to an end, and with a grateful heart, I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket. While I will spend significant time with my young family, I look forward to charting a new phase in my life. I take this opportunity to thank the President, Secretary and the office bearers of the BCCI for their support and encouragement throughout my cricket career,” Uthappa wrote in his statement.

“I would also like to thank Karnataka State Cricket Association, Saurashtra Cricket Association and Kerala Cricket Association for the honour of representing the respective states during the course of my career. Further, I would like to express my gratitude to the IPL teams I represented – MI, RCB, PWI and RR. A special mention to KKR & CSK for all the wonderful memories and support my family and | received during my time with them – something I will always cherish. I would like to thank my parents and sister for allowing me to pursue my passion and for all the sacrifices they made for me while growing up, enabling me to succeed in my chosen field. To my coaches, mentors and guides for their guidance and support through the years that have brought me this far, a big thank you,” the statement added.

West Indies announces Women squad for home ODI series against New Zealand

West Indies name Women ODI squad for New Zealand series

Cricket West Indies (CWI), on Tuesday, announced their Women’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, starting on September 16.

The three-match ODI series will witness star all-rounder Hayley Matthews take the captaincy role from Stafanie Taylor for the first time.

It will be the first series for the Windies women without Deandra Dottin, who announced her shock retirement in August. Similarly, the experienced duo of Anisa Mohammed and Kycia Knight will also miss the ODIs.

Meanwhile, wicketkeeper-batter Natasha McLean and off-spinner Sheneta Grimmond have been drafted into the squad, along with the left-arm pace bowler Jannillea Glasgow. Notably, Grimmond’s last international match was an ODI against Pakistan in November 2021, while McLean hasn’t played for the West Indies since September 2020.

“The New Zealand series is very important on the women’s cricket landscape not only because it starts a new cycle, but also because it is part of the preparation leading towards the T20 World Cup in South Africa,” said lead selector for women’s cricket Ann Browne-John.

“With a few senior players unavailable at this time, for different reasons, like the experienced Anisa Mohammed, Kycia Knight and recently retired Deandra Dottin, the selectors were still able to get a blend of senior and developing players, including Under-19 player Jannillea Glasgow and returning players Natasha McLean and Sheneta Grimmond. Ultimately, we believe that captain Hayley Matthews, in her first series, will have a promising squad of players to start building with,” she added.

West Indies ODI squad:

Hayley Matthews (captain), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shemaine Campbelle, Shamilia Connell, Afy Fletcher, Cherry Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Jannillea Glasgow, Sheneta Grimmond, Chinelle Henry, Kyshona Knight, Natasha McLean, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Shakera Selman, Stafanie Taylor, Rashada Williams

Smriti Mandhana pondering to pull out of the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League

Smriti Mandhana consering pulling out of Women's BBL

India Women cricket star Smriti Mandhana is considering pulling out of the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in order to manage her workload and keep herself fit for international projects.

Smriti began 2022 with an ODI tour of New Zealand in February, right before the 50-over World Cup in the same country in March. She then took part in the domestic tournament and travelled to Sri Lanka for the white-ball series.

Later in July and August, Smriti played a pivotal role for India in their campaign in Commonwealth Games, where the Women in Blue reached the final and finished with a silver medal after losing to Australia.

Since then, the star opener has been in the UK, as she represented Southern Brave in the Women’s Hundred and then joined the India squad for the ongoing white-ball series against England, which started with a T20I leg on September 10.

“I think more than the mental part, it’s about managing a little bit of physical part. Definitely, I’ll be thinking about pulling out of WBBL because I don’t want to miss out on playing for India or having any niggles when I play for India because I want to give my 100% when I play international cricket. So definitely, I’ll be thinking about playing or pulling out of Big Bash,” said Smriti in a press conference from Derby.

“I have been on the road for a while now. Post the one-day World Cup, I have been on the road with the domestic and the tournaments you mentioned [the Sri Lanka tour, the Commonwealth Games, the Women’s Hundred]. I just try to tell myself that because of Covid, we haven’t really played a lot of cricket, and we really hoped that we came back and start playing cricket. And now I can’t be complaining that we have a lot of cricket on the platter. As a woman player, we always wanted this sort of schedule for us,” she added.

Twitter reactions: Steve Smith, bowlers help Australia whitewash New Zealand in the ODI series

Australia seal ODI series against New Zealand

Australia defeated New Zealand by 25 runs in the third and final ODI to whitewash the Black Caps in the Chappell-Hadlee series in Cairns on Sunday.

Steve Smith smashed a remarkable 105 in the challenging conditions to power Australia to a healthy total of 267/5 in their assigned 50 overs. After being asked to bat first once again, the hosts had a shaky start, losing both their openers with the score reading 16.

Then, Smith and Marnus Labuchagne stitched a crucial 118-run stand for the third wicket to revive Australia. Both batters scored the fifties and were looking set to cruise through, but in the 34th over, Labuschagne lost his wicket for a well-made 52 off 78 balls.

However, Smith stayed and kept the scoreboard running. He smashed his 12th century in the 50-over format and built another vital partnership of 69 runs with Alex Carey for the fourth wicket before Mitchell Santner dismissed the New South Wales batter for 105. For the visitors, Trent Boult picked up two wickets for 25 from 10 overs, including 4 maidens.

In response, New Zealand got bundled out for 242 in 49.5 overs, losing the contest by 25 runs. Glenn Phillips top scored for the tourists with 47 from 53 deliveries, including two fours and as many sixes.

James Neesham (36), Finn Allen (35) and Mitchell Santner (30) also contributed well but couldn’t take their team over the finish line. For the home team, Mitchell Starc bagged three wickets for 60 runs, while Sean Abbott (2/31) and Cameron Green (2/25).

Put to bat first, Sri Lanka were in deep trouble, losing their five wickets for just 58 before Bhanuka Rajapaksa rescued his side. Rajapaksa played a top knock of 71 runs from just 45 deliveries to inspire the Lankans to post a target of 171.

Apart from the left-handed batter, Hasaranga also played a quick knock of 36 runs off 21 balls. For Pakistan, Haris Rauf took three wickets, while Shadab Khan, Naseem Shah, and Iftikhar Ahmed took one scalp each.

In the chase of 171, Pakistan couldn’t manage to form a decent partnership and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan smashed 55 off 49 balls with the help of five boundaries, but he didn’t get any support from other batters as the Men in Green were bundled out for 147, losing the grand finale by 23 runs.

A four-wicket haul by Pramod Madushan and a three-wicket over by Wanindu Hasaranga was the eye-catching performances from Sri Lanka while defending 170. Chamika Karunaratne and Maheesh Theekshana scalped two and one wickets, respectively.
