From Gerhard Erasmus to Shreyas Iyer: Top 10 ODI run-scorers in 2022
Unlike the T20 Internationals (T20Is), the year 2022 did not see a lot of One-Day Internationals (ODI), probably because of the T20 World Cup 2022. Due to the global event, many teams prepared for the shortest format and gave preference for playing the bilateral T20I matches
This year’s first ODI series was held between West Indies and Ireland, while the last was a much-talked-about three-match ODI leg played between Bangladesh and India. Several batters showcased their consistent run-scoring throughout the year and rocked the charts with some memorable knocks.
Quite a few Associate nations played ODIs this year which reflected the run-scorers list as well, with Namibia all-rounder Merwe Gerhard Erasmus scoring the most, 956 runs from 21 matches at an outstanding average of 56.23. He smashed one century and eight fifties, with an unbeaten 121 being his best knock this year.
The impact of Associate Nations was quite visible in ODIs as the top-5 leading run-getters of 2022 belong to these countries. The top-10 list also features a couple of Indian superstars and two West Indies cricketers, along with Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who is at the 10th spot with 679 runs in 9 games at an impressive average of 84.87, including three hundreds and five half-centuries.
The two Indians on the list are Shreyas Iyer and veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan. Iyer has scored 724 runs this year in 17 matches with the help of one hundred and six fifties. Similarly, Dhawan managed to score 688 in 22 games, including six half-centuries.

"Quite Negative": Ex-Pakistan Star Criticises Team's Approach In Test Cricket
The ex-Pakistan star expressed his disappointment after Pakistan narrowly escaped defeat in the Test series opener against New Zealand.
Rishabh Pant undergoes plastic surgery; will take at least three to six months to recover
Young India cricketer Rishabh Pant has undergone plastic surgery after he was left with facial injuries following a serious car accident near Roorkee, Uttarakhand, on Friday morning.
The wicketkeeper-batter also underwent MRI scans on his brain and spine, which have come back as normal, according to ESPNcricinfo.
Pant was alone in his Mercedes-Benz luxury sedan when the accident happened on the Narsan border of Roorkee near Hammadpur Jhal.
According to the local police, the car flipped twice and pictures showed the extensive impact and fire damage.
During the accident, Pant sustained multiple cuts on his right-hand forearm and leg, and has lacerated wounds over forehead and near eyebrow, and multiple graze abrasions on his back.
Dr Qamar Azam, who looks after the sports injury department at AIIMS-Rishikesh, told TOI: “Pant will take at least three to six months to recover from the ligament injury. And if it’s severe, he may take more time. Further evaluation can be based on his detailed injury report.”
Pant was not part of India’s T20, and ODI squads against Sri Lanka, which starts on January 3, and his most recent appearance was during the second Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka, where he played a match-winning knock of 93 runs in the first innings. Pant was due to head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for strength and conditioning before the 4-match Test series against Australia in February.
According to the BCCI, their honorary secretary Jay Shah has spoken to Pant’s family over a phone call.
Shah also tweeted about the same on the micro-blogging site. “My thoughts and prayers are with Rishabh Pant as he fights his way back to recovery,” he wrote.
“I have spoken to his family and the doctors treating him. Rishabh is stable and undergoing scans. We are closely monitoring his progress and will provide him with all the necessary support.”

PAK vs NZ, 1st Test: Kane Williamson astounded by Babar Azam’s declaration in the final session
Pakistan got saved off their fifth consecutive defeat at home with a hard-fought draw in the first Test against New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi on Friday. Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi registered his career-best bowling figures (6-86) and threatened to give Pakistan a defeat in the first two sessions on the fifth and final day. But Saud Shakeel, who scored an unbeaten 55, and Mohammad Wasim (43) defied for 75 minutes and 111 balls during their 71-run eighth-wicket partnership to deprive New Zealand of a win.
The hosts’ fought brilliantly after the Tea break and declared their second innings on 311-8.
Chasing a tough target of 138 to win in 15 overs, New Zealand finished on 61-1 with Tom Latham unbeaten on 35 and Devon Conway on 18. The encounter ended in a draw after bad light stopped play in the final session of Day 5 in Karachi.
After the draw, former Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson, who was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for his brilliant 200 not out in New Zealand’s first innings, said that he was astounded by Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s decision to declare their innings with just an hour left to be played in the first Test.
“Saud Shakeel steered Pakistan safe when a defeat could have been on the cards, as Ish Sodhi ended with career best figures of 6/86. Then came the biggest surprise, as Babar declared with an hour to play and dangled the carrot for the Kiwis. A gutsy, creditable declaration to keep the crowds entertained, and Latham and Conway did entertain by going into T20 mode. However, bad light played spoilsport and after just 7.3 overs of the final innings, we had to call it a draw,” said Williamson in the post-match interview.
The second and final Test will be played at the same venue from January 2.

Australia name Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green’s replacement for third Test against South Africa
Australian pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Cameron Green will miss the third and final Test against South Africa due to their respective injuries, Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed on Friday.
Starc suffered an injury on the third day of the second Test, which Australia won by an innings and 182 runs to seal the series. Meanwhile, Green has been given the time to recover from a broken finger he sustained in Melbourne.
The final match of the three-match Test series is scheduled to begin on January 4 in Sydney.
Australia’s national selectors have added Ashton Agar and Matthew Renshaw to the squad as replacement players for Starc and Green.
Renshaw, who played his last Test in 2018, recently scored a brilliant double century against New South Wales. He also returned to bat as an opener for Queensland this year with an eye on replacing David Warner or Usman Khawaja in the future.
“Matthew is included as a versatile batting option who is in good form, including an unbeaten century in the recent PM’s XI tour match against the West Indies,” selector Tony Dodemaide told the reporters.
Agar, on the other hand, played the last of his four Tests in 2017 in Chattogram. His inclusion hints the Aussies are expecting a characteristically dry surface at the SCG, with Dodemaide citing the left-hander’s aptitude with the bat could well contribute to the hosts’ effort.
“Ashton offers a second spin option should the Sydney pitch be conducive to turn, as it has done in the past.
“He also brings a solid batting component,” added Dodemaide.
Australia squad for the Sydney Test:
Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Lance Morris, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner

Rishabh Pant hospitalised after getting seriously injured in a major car crash
Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant was involved in a major accident while returning from Delhi to his hometown, Roorkee, in Uttarakhand. It is believed that Pant’s car collided with the divider and caught fire near the Delhi-Dehradun highway in the early hours on Friday, and Pant was subsequently taken to a local hospital before being shifted to a private multi-speciality hospital in New Delhi.
According to reports, Pant was alone in the car at the time of the accident and was taken out of the burning car by the local police. As a result of the collision, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter has a head, knee, and shin injuries.
Notably, Pant was not part of the India squads for the forthcoming T20I and ODI home series against Sri Lanka starting on January 3. He was due to join the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for strength and conditioning before the home Test series against Australia in February.
Pant most recently played a match-winning knock of 93 in the second Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur, which helped Team India win the contest as well as the two-match series.

Twitter reactions: Australia steamroll South Africa in MCG Test by innings and 182 runs to clinch series
Australia registered their first home series win against South Africa since the 2005-06 summer after a dominating victory in the Boxing Day Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday. The result also derailed South Africa’s hopes of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Now, the Proteas need to win the final match of the series to stay in contention for the WTC final.
The tourists were bowled out for 204 inside 69 overs in the second innings, with Temba Bavuma the only batter to reach a half-century. His 63-run stand for the fifth wicket with Kyle Verreynne was the only partnership that grew to over 50. Verreynne, with 33, was the second top-scorer for the visitors.
Nathan Lyon had a fruitful outing on Day 4 as he picked up three wickets for 58. Similarly, Scott Boland bagged a couple of scalps. Pat Cummins‘ insane effort of conceding only 20 runs in 16 overs and making good use of the DRS to get rid of Sarel Erwee and Marco Jansen was noticeable as well.
Earlier in the game, Australia declared their first innings on a massive 575/8 courtesy of David Warner’s stunning double century and Alex Carey‘s maiden ton in response to South Africa’s mere 189.
“It (the win) is right up there. We have had some great contests with South Africa. We hadn’t won against them at home in 20 years, I think, so pretty special. I thought how Warner and Smith batted in the heat was pretty gutsy. Starc and Green as well, put their injuries behind them and turned up. Davey was superb, you could see his energy from ball one, and to do it in his 100th Test is awesome. He (Carey) has really cemented his place in the Test side, and to get a hundred in a Boxing Day Test is special,” said Aussie skipper Cummins after the match.
Brief Score: Australia 575/8 dec (David Warner 200, Alex Carey 111, Steve Smith 85) beat South Africa 189 (Marco Jansen 59, Kyle Verreynne 52, Cameron Green 5/27) & 204 (Temba Bavuma 65; Nathan Lyon 3/58) by an innings and 182 runs.

Mumbai Indians Appoint J Arunkumar As Assistant Batting Coach
J Arunkumar, a heavyweight in the domestic circuit in the 1990s and 2000s, has been appointed as the assistant batting coach of five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians.
Here’s why Sanju Samson has not been named in India squad for Sri Lanka ODIs
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Tuesday, announced their men’s squad for the upcoming ODI and T20I home series against Sri Lanka. India will play host to Sri Lanka in three T20Is and as many ODIs from January 03 to January 15.
The Men in Blue last squared off against the Islanders in July 2021, when a second-string Indian team travelled to Sri Lanka under the captaincy of veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan. And now, after a gap of 18 months, the two sides will renew their rivalry.
In the 16-member squad for the 50-overs rubber against the 1996 World Cup winners, the selectors made a few surprise calls as many high-profile players like Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar were dropped from the team, whereas Sanju Samson was given the desired break.
Samson and his wife Charulatha are set to be blessed with a baby, and, as per the media reports, this is the primary reason for the Kerala-lad skipping the Sri Lanka ODIs.
On Christmas eve, Samson also shared an adorable post on Instagram, dropping a hint about his wife’s pregnancy.
“The best Christmas gift is to realise the blessings we already have. A very merry Christmas from ours to yours,” he had captioned his post.
Samson played 10 ODIs and six T20Is for India in 2022. In the one-dayers, the right-handed batter scored 284 runs at an average of 70 and a strike rate of 103. In the series against South Africa, he came to bat in tough situations and took his side over the finish line. In T20Is, the 28-year-old showed versatility and flexibility by batting from number 3 to seven. He scored 177 runs in the 20-overs format this year at 44.75 , with the best score of 77 versus Ireland.

Suryakumar Yadav opens up on his camaraderie with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
Team India’s batting sensation Suryakumar Yadav has become a household name following his extraordinary performances, especially in the shortest format. With his 360-degree technique, Surya has quickly risen to the top of the T20I rankings for batters and has become one of the finest white-ball hitters in the world.
Having modern-day greats like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the team already, Surya has accomplished a special feat as fans and experts rate him the next face of Indian cricket after Kohli and Rohit. But what does Surya think of sharing the change room with two stalwarts?
Well, in a recent interview, the Pune-born cricketer admitted that he has been very lucky to play alongside the two icons of Indian cricket. Surya said both Kohli and Rohit are ‘different breed of international cricketers’.
“I am actually very lucky that I share the dressing room with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. They are a different breed of international cricketers. Things they have achieved, I don’t know I will ever be able to achieve that,” said Surya as quoted by PTI.
Surya, while citing his recent-few partnerships with Kohli, reckoned that he has enjoyed batting with the former India skipper. When it comes to Rohit, Surya opined that the veteran Indian opener is like his elder brother, who is always there for help.
“Recently, I have had some good partnerships with Virat bhai, and I have enjoyed batting with him. Rohit is like an elder brother and my sounding board. When I am in doubt, I ask him direct questions about my game. He has been a good guiding force since I joined MI in 2018,” added Suryakumar.
Notably, Suryakumar has been in the form of his life this year in T20Is. In 31 games, the right-handed batter has scored 1,164 runs at an average of 46.56, with the help of two hundreds and nine half-centuries and the best score of 117. He is also the highest T20I run-scorer this year.

BCCI announce India’s ODI and T20I squads for Sri Lanka series; Rishabh Pant dropped
Opening batter Rohit Sharma will return to lead Team India in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. All-rounder Hardik Pandya has been named the new vice-captain of the side in place of KL Rahul. Hardik will also continue to lead the team in the T20Is, and Surya Kumar Yadav will be his deputy.
Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant has been axed from the limited-overs squads while two uncapped pacers Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar have received their maiden India call-up for the T20Is.
Even Rohit, Rahul and Virat Kohli are not part of the shortest format and there is an indication that they might not be picked again keeping the 2024 T20 World Cup in mind.
The trio will probably be asked to concentrate on the 50-overs format with a World Cup set to be played in India next year.
“Yes, there will be no official announcement that Rohit has been removed from T20I captaincy but he along with Kohli and Rahul will be phased out from the format. Obviously, Rohit’s dislocated thumb injury hasn’t completely healed although he has started training. But phasing out has indeed started,” a senior BCCI source privy to development was quoted as saying to PTI.
Meanwhile, left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan has been dropped from the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series, being replaced by Shubman Gill. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah also doesn’t feature in both the squads as they continue to recover from their respective injuries.
The Sri Lanka tour of India 2023 will begin on January 3 in Mumbai. The three ODIs will be played on January 10, 12 and 15, respectively.
India T20I squad: Hardik Pandya (c), Suryakumar Yadav (vc), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, Mukesh Kumar.

Australia vs South Africa 2nd Test Day 3 Live Score Updates
Australia vs South Africa 2nd Test Day 3 Live: Australia have taken a healthy lead against South Africa
Monday, December 26, 2022
AUS vs SA: David Warner joins an elite club with a century in his 100th Test
After nearly three years, Australian superstar David Warner ended his century drought on Tuesday (December 27) and etched his name in record books. The ongoing Boxing Day Test against South Africa is Warner’s 100th match in the red-ball format, and by scoring a ton, the New South Wales cricketer became only the 10th batter in the history of cricket to hit a century in his 100th Test.
Warner joined an elite league to achieve the unique milestone, becoming just the second Australian to do so after Ricky Ponting, who is the only player to score twin hundreds in his 100th Test. Warner also became only the second player to reach a triple-figure mark in both his 100th ODI as well as 100th Test, after the legendary West Indies cricketer Gordon Greenidge. It was Warner’s 25th Test century and 45th in the international arena. He became the eighth Australian to go past the 8000 Test runs benchmark during the course of his innings.
Notably, it was Warner’s first Test century since January 2020 and his first 50-plus score in the longest format in 11 innings since his previous half-century against Pakistan in Lahore earlier this year. It was just his second international century in all formats since January 2020.
Players to hit a century in their 100th Test match:
- Colin Cowdrey (England), 1968
- Javed Miandad (Pakistan), 1989
- GC Greenidge (West Indies), 1990
- Alec Stewart (England), 2000
- Inzamam ul Haq (Pakistan), 2005
- Ricky Ponting (2) (Australia), 2006
- Graeme Smith (South Africa), 2012
- Hashim Amla (South Africa), 2017
- Joe Root (England), 2021
- DAVID WARNER (Australia), 2022*
Ahead of the Boxing Day game in Melbourne Cricket Ground, Warner had given hints to return to his old form and end the century drought. Warner had cited the instance of his last international century that came against England in November, stating that people were writing him off then, but he came back and hit a ton.
“If anything, I can probably be a bit more aggressive and go back to the older me, take them on a little bit more. But I think that also is dictated from what wickets you are getting. People [were] writing me off in that one-day game here [against England] and I went out and scored a hundred on a pretty dicey wicket. It is about making runs. You’re never out of form,” Warner had said while talking to reporters on the eve of his 100th Test.

Twitter reactions: Ravichandran Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer help India sweep Bangladesh in two-Test series
Ravichandran Ashwin (42 not out) and Shreyas Iyer (29 not out) added an unbeaten 71-run partnership for the eighth wicket that helped India register a thrilling victory against Bangladesh in the second and final Test match of the series.
India resumed Day 4 on 45/4, needing 100 more runs to win in Dhaka and a series sweep (2-0). Early in the day, Bangladesh skipper and left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan trapped Jaydev Unadkat in front, sending the Indian batter back to pavilion for 13. Wickets continued to fall as the touring part lost two more wickets – Rishabh Pant (9) and overnight batter Axar Patel (34) – in quick succession. Both Pant and Patel were dismissed by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who claimed a five-for in the second innings.
The next two batters – Iyer and Ashwin – batted with caution and just kept rotating the strike before settling in nicely. The duo started batting aggressively only when the required number of runs came under 50. At that stage, it looked like India’s game and it eventually turned out to be one.
The eighth wicket stand was India’s second highest in Test cricket in the fourth innings, and it ensured that India moved up to second pace in the 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) table.
India’s next WTC assignment is against Australia, a four-match series at home in February-March 2023.

PCB’s new interim selection committee adds three players for New Zealand Test
Pakistan Cricket Board’s newly appointed interim selection committee has added three players to their Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against New Zealand.
The selection committee, headed by former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, made the call on the very first day of their office. Shahnawaz Dahani, Mir Hamza and Sajid Khan are the players added to the 16-man Test squad that was announced three days ago.
“We had a good discussion on the squad and agreed we needed to strengthen our bowling department to give ourselves the best chance of taking 20 wickets in a match,” Afridi said in a press-release.
“Taking into consideration recent form and performances, we have added fast bowlers Mir Hamza and Shahnawaz Dahani, and off-spinner Sajid Khan.
“I am confident the inclusion of three additional bowling resources will give Babar Azam more options to field the best available squad for the first Test,” he added.
Dhani is the only uncapped among the three but has played two ODIs and 11 T20Is so far for Pakistan.

From Sam Curran to Mukesh Kumar: Top 10 buys in the IPL 2023 mini-auction
The highly-anticipated mini-auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 concluded in Kochi on Friday. 80 players were sold in the record-shattering bidding event for a mammoth amount of INR 167 crore.
Unlike the last time when a major auction took place, this time around, teams had their squad ready, and they just needed few more players to make an ideal combination. No wonder the big focus was towards roping in quality all-rounders as the auction saw intense bidding wars amongst franchises, which resulted in three players breaking Chris Morris‘ record of the most expensive buy in the history of the tournament.
England all-rounder Sam Curran became the most expensive player after Punjab Kings bought him for a whopping INR 18.50 crore. Expectedly, Curran triggered a bidding war as Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals went head to head to acquire his services before Chennai Super Kings entered the contest and took the bid higher. Then came Punjab Kings, who swept away the all-rounder for next season. Curran broke the then-existing record of Morris, who was roped in by Rajasthan Royals for INR 16.25 crore in 2021.
In fact, Morris’ record was also smashed by Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who was picked up by Mumbai Indians for a jaw-breaking INR 17.50 crore. Mumbai fended off a stiff bidding war with Delhi Capitals to buy Green.
Top 10 Buys in the mini-auction:
- Sam Curran (Punjab Kings) – INR 185000000
- Cameron Green (Mumbai Indians) – INR 175000000
- Ben Stokes (Chennai Super Kings) – INR 162500000
- Nicholas Pooran (Lucknow Super Giants) – INR 160000000
- Harry Brook (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – INR 132500000
- Mayank Agarwal (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – INR 82500000
- Shivam Mavi (Gujarat Titans) – INR 60000000
- Jason Holder (Rajasthan Royals) – INR 57500000
- Mukesh Kumar (Delhi Capitals) – INR 55000000
- Heinrich Klaasen (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – INR 52500000

WATCH: Kavya Maran’s priceless reaction after buying Harry Brook at the IPL 2023 auction
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 mini-auction took place in Kochi on Friday (December 23). England all-rounder Sam Curran became the most expensive player in the history of IPL auction after he was acquired by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for a whopping amount of INR 18.50 crore. Meanwhile, his England teammate Harry Brook was roped in by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for INR 13.25 crores.
Kavya Maran, the daughter of SRH owner Kalanithi Maran, marked her present at the IPL auction table, and was all over the moon after acquiring the services of the young England batter.
Interestingly, she did not bid on Kane Williamson who was the first player to be sold in the set 1. He went to Gujarat Titans (GT) for his base price of Rs 2 crore.
Kavya had come to the auction having made up her mind and with the help of legends Brian Lara and Muttiah Muralitharan got her best buys.
